Changes in ecosystems that happen over years can often become unnoticed. That is why long-term research is important in restoring and managing the Florida Everglades and other vulnerable ecosystems, co-ordinate to a new Florida International Academy study.

"Without long-term data, changes appear equally surprises unless yous have the context to understand why they may exist occurring," said John Kominoski, scientist in FIU's Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Enquiry (FCE-LTER) Plan and assistant professor of biological science. "We can empathize the present by agreement the past, but we can't understand the past without a long-term record of data."

In a new paper, Kominoski outlines the value of long-term research, how it plays into what is known near how ecosystems develop or change, and how it could exist used past ecological ascertainment facilities to solve current and predict hereafter environmental challenges. The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal BioScience. It was a collaboration by scientists at FIU and Southern Illinois University.

FIU scientists accept been gathering data in the Everglades that provide valuable information for restoration and direction.For nearly twenty years, the FCE-LTER Program has been examining how water, climate and people impact the Everglades. Information technology is part of the National Science Foundation's Long Term Ecological Inquiry (LTER) Network, which has been documenting changes at enquiry sites throughout the globe since 1980.

The study expands on ecological theories on how and why changes in ecosystems happen. Information technology also highlights findings from across the LTER Network, including FIU'due south FCE-LTER Program, to reveal changes in establish and brute species throughout the world. In tropical wetlands, sea level ascension is causing mangroves to release stored carbon as harmful carbon dioxide into the temper. In deserts, global warming is bringing more rain and dark-green plants to abound where they in one case did not. In tall meadows and dry valleys, melting glaciers are changing where and when establish and brute species are found. In grasslands, farming, burn down prevention and fire extinguishing reduce the ability of native plants to recover. In the Chill, predators and larger animals are getting smaller. Kominoski points out, however, that changes are often not observed ecosystem-wide only in disquisitional locations or hot spots.

"This is center-opening in terms of managing an ecosystem as diverse as the Everglades, for example," Kominoski said. "Long-term data allows us to really hone in on areas of business concern by understanding the needs of an ecosystem in unlike places and at different points in time."

The LTER Network has been documenting changes in different types of environments—from forests and prairies to lakes, coastal marshes and tundra—at 28 research sites throughout the earth. Its success resulted in the creation of like networks by other countries dubbed the International Long Term Ecological Inquiry Network. The networks' open-source data is available for use by students, scientists, resource managers and policy makers.
